Selling mutual fund shares is similar to selling stock or other investment property. To figure the capital gain or loss on the sale, subtract the price you paid for the shares from the amount you sold them for.

Also report the date you purchased the shares and the date you sold them to determine if your gain or loss was a long-term or short-term one.
