Except for those serving in a combat zone, if you are a member of the Armed Forces stationed outside of the United States, including Puerto Rico, on April 15, you automatically have a 2-month extension of time to file your tax return. As with other taxpayers, the extension is only for time to file. Any tax owed must be paid by April 15.
If you are a member of the Armed Forces and are serving in an officially designated combat zone (or contingency operation) on April 15, you the deadline to both file and to pay is extended. The extension is for 180 days plus the number of days you had left to file before you entered service in the combat zone.

Don't forget your state income tax obligations. Getting an extension from the IRS does not necessarily get you more time to file with the states. Form more information, visit Extension Guidelines for States.
