E-Filing is Easy: Fewer Headaches! Faster Refunds!
Taxpayers Moving from Paper Returns to E-filing, Computer Programs

Taxpayers are increasingly finding that – in addition to cutting weeks off the time it takes to get a refund from the IRS – computer-based tax preparation and e-filing simplify the tax preparation process and help ensure that taxpayers take advantage of all the credits and deductions for which they qualify.

The number of taxpayers who e-filed their own return grew to 14.5 million last year, up by more than 20 percent, according to IRS statistics. H&R Block estimates that nearly one million taxpayers will move from filing paper returns to computer-based e-filing this year.

H&R Block pioneered e-filing with the IRS starting in 1986, and since has e-filed nearly 140 million returns.

But the benefits of e-filing go far beyond the simple submission of a digital return to the IRS – the most dramatic benefits result from the use of computer-based tax programs that simplify tax preparation, deliver help with tough tax issues and enable users to e-file their returns to the IRS.

Tax programs such as H&R Block TaxCut® software and the online tax products at hrblock.com cut hours of tax preparation with a simple, click-through interview that guides the user to relevant credits and deductions while automatically filling out the appropriate tax forms. Clients are then able to seamlessly e-file the digital returns created by the programs.

The IRS estimates that digital returns are 99.5 percent accurate, as opposed to the 80 percent accuracy rate of paper returns. That means that those who e-file are 40 times less likely to get an IRS Error Notice.

In addition to improved accuracy, e-filing enables taxpayer’s who are due a refund to get their refund money faster. Combined with direct electronic deposit, e-filing can cut the average time it takes to get a refund from the IRS from 5-8 weeks to as quick as ten days.

Those who e-file also enjoy the peace-of-mind of knowing that the IRS has accepted their return, as the IRS sends e-mail confirmation to those whose e-filed returns have been accepted.

Those taxpayers considering the move from pen and paper to computer-based tax solutions can try it out without paying – the online programs ask for payment after the return is completed and the client can see the result. Once payment is received, the program e-files the return to the IRS.
