How do I report my foster-care income?

It depends on how you’re paid.

You don't have to include the payments in your income if both of these apply:

  • You’re paid for providing care to qualified foster individuals.
  • You’re paid by any of these institutions:
    • State
    • Political subdivision
    • Qualified foster-care placement agency

However, you must include the payments in your income if any of these applies:

  • You care for either of these:
    • More than 10 qualified foster individuals under age 19
    • Five qualified foster individuals age 19 or older
  • You’re paid to maintain space in your home for emergency foster care.
  • You’re in the business as a foster care provider.
  • Your payment is designated as compensation for providing additional care for any of these individuals:
    • Physically handicapped
    • Mentally handicapped
    • Emotionally handicapped
