If I'm required to have a cell phone for my job, can I deduct the business use of it?
You can't deduct any part of the base bill for a personal cell phone, even if your employer requires it.
You can deduct charges for extra services beyond the base bill that are an employee business expense. You should keep records that show:
- Amount of employee business expense
- Time and place you incurred the expense
- Business purpose of the expense
You can also take a depreciation deduction for the business-use portion of the cost of the cell phone.
