IRS Notice CP2501

Your tax return doesn't match the information we have on file

Each year, the IRS sends millions of notices regarding discrepancies on tax returns, but not all of these notices are sent correctly. Before you attempt to contact or pay the IRS, let H&R Block help you make sure your CP2501 notice doesn't contain any errors.

What happened?

  1. The IRS compared its income records on file with the income reported and the tax return does not match information on file.
  2. The IRS sent a CP2501 notice to ask for an explanation of the tax return discrepancy. If you don't respond, or if the IRS doesn't agree with your explanation, the IRS will send an additional notice outlining changes to be made on your tax return.

How can H&R Block help?

  • When the IRS calculates taxes owed on the CP2501, it does so at the highest tax rate and with no deductions. We'll make sure you're not paying more than required.
  • Penalties are not always calculated correctly. We'll make sure you haven't been incorrectly penalized.
  • CP2501 notices are occasionally related to identity theft. Come into an office and we'll look into your IRS account and research the source of the discrepancy.
