Return to credits

I have a question about job-related expenses for continuing education. If I have to take continuing education classes for professional development in order to keep my teaching certificate, am I able to claim the Lifetime Learning Credit?

If the courses you took were through an eligible institution, you can qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit. An eligible institution is one that participates in the Department of Education's financial aid program.

You might qualify to deduct job-related expenses on Schedule A. To claim this deduction for classes that maintain your certification, the certificate must be required to maintain one of these:

  • Your current position
  • Your salary
  • Your employee status

You must choose either to claim the Lifetime Learning Credit or claim the deduction. You can't take the Lifetime Learning Credit and a business deduction for the same expenses.
