Return to credits

When claiming education credit for tuition and education expenses, how do I decide which education tax benefit is most advantageous to my situation?

To choose the education credit that gives you the best tax benefit for 2015, you'll most likely have to decide between:

  • American Opportunity Credit -- Use Form 8863 for this this credit, which usually:
    • Offers the most benefit
    • Is only available to degree-seeking students
  • You do not qualify for the American Oppurtunity Credit if:
    • You aren't in your first four years of post-secondary education.
    • You aren't enrolled at least half-time.
    • You've been convicted of a felony drug offense.
    • Lifetime Learning Credit -- You can claim this credit:
      • For an unlimited number of years
      • Even if you aren’t seeking a degree
