If I'm a senior who's been in college more than four years, do I qualify for the American Opportunity Credit?
You might be eligible to claim the American Opportunity Credit if you haven't done either of these:
- Claimed the American Opportunity Credit or Hope Credit for four tax years of your post-secondary education
- Completed four years of post-secondary education
If you've claimed either of these credits four times during your college education, you can't claim these credits again.
If you've claimed one of these education credits for three or fewer tax years, you might still be eligible.
