I have a question about education credits. If I'm receiving student loans to pay for my education, can I claim education tax credits?

You’re eligible for education tax credits because:

  • You’re legally liable to repay the student loan.
  • Qualified expenses you paid with student loan money are considered paid by you and therefore eligible to be claimed for education tax credits.

If you pay your tuition with aid that you don’t have to repay, the IRS doesn’t consider it as paid by you. This includes:

  • Scholarships
  • Grants
  • Other types of aid that you don't have to repay

You can only include expenses you paid yourself for education tax credits.
