What are the education credit requirements -- How long do I have to be in school to be considered a student for tax purposes?

You must have been in school for at least one academic period to meet the education credit requirements.

You claim education credit for post-secondary education expenses. The American Opportunity Credit is available for the first four years of post-secondary education. This includes any year you claimed the Hope Credit.

To claim this credit, you must be a degree-seeking student. The Lifetime Learning Credit is available for an unlimited number of years and is available even if you aren't seeking a degree.
