I have a question about education credit. If I received a grant, what education tax credit am I able to claim?

You can only claim an education credit for qualifying out-of-pocket expenses you paid during the year that weren't reimbursed by these:

  • Non-taxable Scholarships
  • Non-taxable Grants
  • Other means

If you paid more in out-of-pocket education expenses than your tax-free grants covered, you can claim an education tax credit. This covers the portion of your expenses that are more than the grant. Under certain circumstances, you may be able to claim the grant or scholarship as taxable in order to claim the education credit if the grant or scholarship may be used for nonqualified expenses.
