Longview Elementary School in Phoenix gets makeover with more than 1,300 H&R Block manhours
Longview Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona was in dire need of a well-deserved and long overdue makeover. Longview Elementary School has approximately 700 preschool through sixth grade students enrolled and is the oldest school in the Osborn school district. The last time Longview Elementary School was remodeled was back in 1992 and the last time it was renovated was in 2006.
Enter approximately 450 H&R Block leaders and managers from across the country, on Tuesday, September 18 who rolled up their sleeves and donned their best outdoor work attire to give Longview Elementary School all the tools they need to help them succeed this school year.
“We’ve worked with H&R Block for several weeks on identifying an ideal location that would provide a meaningful experience and help a bunch of awesome kids who wanted a campus that would give them energy when they arrive,” said Francisco Avalos director of engagement at United Way.
The associates painted new art murals, refinished faded signage, revitalized the garden and landscaping, refurbished picnic tables, added safety crosswalks, assembled school readiness kits, sanitized classrooms and much more.

“There’s hardly a part of the school that our teams haven’t touched today,” said Karen Orosco, senior vice president, H&R Block. “I’m so proud of all of our associates: seeing their level of excitement, rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty in this very hot weather for a great cause.”
H&R Block volunteers worked in over 100-degree heat for more than three hours hammering, nailing, sanding, digging, mounting, power washing, dusting, painting, staining and leaf blowing several parts of Longview Elementary School’s buildings, classrooms, lounges, walls and gardens.
“For a while now we had been looking at ways where we could get new murals that were culturally relevant to the kids and beautify the spaces in our hallways and throughout the school,” said Benjamin Smith, principal at Longview Elementary School. “Everyone was so amazing and seeing everyone here at once filled my heart and I know it will fill the hearts of our kids for months to come.”
H&R Block’s nonprofit referral program generated donations for more than 2,400 nonprofits this year, totaling more than $1 million for the second straight year.
