H&R Block is Building a Stronger Workforce by Prioritizing Diverse Recruitment
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 11, 2023) – H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) recently showed how the company is “Better Together” at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) conference in held in Kansas City, MO. The four-day event brought together hundreds of Black engineering students and professionals from around the country to discuss innovation, share keys to success, and network. H&R Block set up a booth at the event for a sleek and comfortable space to hold conversations, share job opportunities and meet talented professionals.
“The mission of the National Society of Black Engineers is to increase the number of Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” said Sarah Lauck, Vice President of People and Culture at H&R Block. “This aligns well to our Block Horizons 2025 talent goal and our Connected Culture. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), African Americans represent only 9% of STEM workers in the U.S. Although representation can vary across different disciplines within the engineering field, rates of Black engineers remain low overall. Research indicates there are systemic barriers to entry and retention for underrepresented groups in engineering. That’s why NSBE is working to create a strong community and opportunities for Black engineers, to benefit each person individually and the industry as a whole.
H&R Block’s commitment to diversifying its engineering talent extends well beyond having a presence at NSBE. The company’s diverse and growing engineering culture champions innovation year-round through programs like IT Accelerate, a 12-month program which is designed to attract early career professionals to the variety of technology opportunities at H&R Block while training them for long-term success within the company. Earlier this month, H&R Block held its inaugural Open IT hackathon where fifty teams of IT associates demonstrated their talent in an event created to promote and foster innovation, creative problem solving and experimentation.
