H&R Block pick-up service offers clients in need another way to meet the tax filing deadline

In the face of an unprecedented pandemic,  H&R Block tax professionals and associates have demonstrated their commitment to H&R Block’s purpose, to provide help and inspire confidence in our clients and communities everywhere.  During these times, H&R Block has taken various steps to help people get their much-needed tax refunds. As the extended July 15 tax filing deadline approaches, millions have not yet filed their taxes. As of May 29, 2020, the IRS has reported 133.8 million federal income tax returns received compared to 143.1 million returns filed during the same time last year.[1]

H&R Block realized there was more it could do to help taxpayers not just file but access expert tax preparation. That’s why it launched a new pick-up tax service in Detroit, Pittsburgh, and San Diego. The service, available at participating offices, allows clients to schedule a pick-up appointment where an H&R Block associate will come to their house to securely retrieve their tax documents, allowing them to work remotely with their tax preparer.

An H&R Block survey found that 56% of Americans say they feel anxious when they think about having to leave the house. Despite their anxieties, filers still deserve the confidence that comes from working with a local tax preparer who understands their unique needs.

H&R Block’s pick-up tax service was created for taxpayers who, for any reason, want the support of having an expert tax pro handle their paperwork—without having to submit it online or go into an office. Susan Renzo, EA, master tax advisor at H&R Block, has several clients who are immunocompromised or in a high-risk population for coronavirus. She’s already seen the success in offering pick-up tax service as a way to help her clients file their taxes.

Renzo has an older client who was in a nursing home and was hospitalized for a broken leg. He was concerned about meeting the tax deadline and not being able to get to an office. “He knows his obligations and wants to meet them and is very protective of his wife. He was frustrated and upset,” said Renzo. “I said…I’ll come to the nursing home… And that put him at ease.”

Renzo went to the nursing home to retrieve the client’s tax documents and prepared his returns remotely. She has helped other clients through contactless pick-up tax service including a couple with disabilities who couldn’t find a ride to the office due to coronavirus.

Of the experiences, Renzo said, “Coming to people’s homes who are vulnerable on a lot of levels…it was heartwarming to see their relief that their taxes had been done. They have enough to worry about without that hanging over them.”

The pick-up tax service allows clients access to the help and expertise of a tax professional and their maximum refund but gives them the option to stay home. H&R Block is offering pick-up service through the extended deadline at no additional cost. However, appointments must be scheduled in advance with the participating office.

With safety measures in place for everyone’s well-being, and flexible options to file, H&R Block offices remain open for clients to access their much-needed refunds. In addition to pick-up service, clients have options to schedule appointments or use drop-off services at an office, or to use virtual and do-it-yourself online software and desktop products.
