You plug in your numbers and eagerly anticipate that final number. But when that last screen doesn\u2019t show a refund, you have to ask, \u201cwhy do I&nbsp;owe&nbsp;taxes?\u201d We get it. When you see you owe taxes, it can be somewhat of a shock\u2014especially if you were planning on a nice refund. We\u2019ll answer, \u201cwhy do I owe so much in taxes?\u201d. Then, we\u2019ll help outline what your next steps should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-i-owe-taxes-this-year\">Why do I owe taxes this year? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you received a refund last year, you generally could expect one this year\u2014if\u00a0your personal tax situation was the same. But, for many, their situation was not the same. That said, the answer to \u201cwhy do I owe taxes this year?\u201d might have to do with those life changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, taking on an extra job or self-employment are all plausible causes for your refund amount changing from year to year and can answer &#8220;why do I owe money on my tax return this year?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New 1099 hustle&nbsp;\u2013<\/strong> If you have a freelance or gig job, but haven\u2019t been paying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/refunds-and-payments\/how-to-pay-quarterly-taxes\/\">estimated quarterly taxes<\/a>, that could shed light on the question \u201cwhy do I owe the IRS?\u201d As a gig worker, you generally need to pay quarterly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/forms\/estimated-tax-1040es\/\">estimated taxes<\/a> on your own. Since there\u2019s no paycheck withholding by an employer in these situations, the job of keeping up with tax payments falls on your shoulders. Here\u2019s what to look for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering, \u201cwhy else would I owe taxes this year?\u201d The first question you should ask yourself is \u201cwhat other changes were there in my tax situation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/why-do-i-owe-taxes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56426\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It could be one big change or several changes that made an impact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Filing changes<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 But big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/personal-tax-planning\/life-changing-events-taxes\/\">life changes<\/a>, such as marriage, divorce, retirement or adding a dependent (having a baby, adopting) can affect the your tax situation such as the filing status for which you are eligible and other aspects of how you are taxed. For example, changing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/personal-tax-planning\/what-is-head-of-household-status\/\">Head of Household<\/a>&nbsp;to Single will affect your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/tax-brackets-and-rates\/what-are-the-tax-brackets\/\">tax bracket<\/a> and the credits and deductions you can take. If you\u2019re married, be sure you understand the difference between the status of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/personal-tax-planning\/married-filing-jointly-vs-separately\/\">Married Filing Jointly vs. Married Filing Separately<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Older children<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 To claim the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/child-tax-credit\/\">Child Tax Credit<\/a>, your child must have been under age 18 at the end of the year. If they no longer qualify, you no longer can get the Credit. This significant drop can mean a great deal to your bottom line and may answer the question of \u201cwhy do I owe taxes?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credit and deduction eligibility<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Other changes in your life can impact your eligibility for various types of credits and deductions. For example, changes in your income might affect whether you qualify for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/earned-income-credit\/\">Earned Income Credit<\/a>. Or, if you\u2019re a college student, maybe you were previously able to claim the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/american-opportunity-tax-credit\/\">American Opportunity Credit<\/a>, but due to an enrollment status change are no longer eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-i-owe-so-much-in-taxes-what-can-i-do-about-it\">Why do I owe so much in taxes? What can I do about it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While some taxpayers prefer to have more in their paycheck vs. receiving a refund, many of us look forward to getting money back at tax time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If you owe taxes this year and hoped for a refund instead<\/strong>, you can update your withholding. It\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll owe again next year unless you complete a new Form W-4 and increase your withholding.
