Following are some lien examples that can result in debt offset that can reduce your refund:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overdue federal tax debts<\/li>\n<li>Past-due child support<\/li>\n<li>Federal agency nontax debts<\/li>\n<li>State income tax debt<\/li>\n<li>Unemployment compensation debts owed to a state (for fraudulent wages paid or contributions due to a state fund)<\/li>\n<li>Direct and guaranteed student loan repayments<\/li>\n<li>Small Business Administration (SBA) loan repayments<\/li>\n<li>Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) loan repayments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If this applies to you, the Department of Treasury&#8217;s Bureau of Fiscal Service (BFS) will take your refund to pay the debt. The BFS will send it to the agency you owe. The IRS will then give you a check or direct deposit for any remaining refund.<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s an offset, the BFS will send you a notice showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Original refund amount<\/li>\n<li>Your offset amount<\/li>\n<li>Agency receiving the payment<\/li>\n<li>Address and phone number of the agency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It depends on the type of tax lien.
