However, <b>if you qualify for an exemption<\/b>, you&#8217;ll reduce or eliminate your shared responsibility payment. It&#8217;s also possible that members of your household will qualify for different exemptions.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">Note: Exemption <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">in this post <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">refers to the healthcare coverage requirement. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">It<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">\u2019s<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">not the same as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\"> a tax <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/what-is-an-exemption\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">exemption<\/span><\/a><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6867964 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW6867964 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are some exemptions you can claim:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Religious reasons <\/b>&#8212; You&#8217;re a member of one of these:\n<ul>\n<li>A recognized religious sect that objects to insurance<\/li>\n<li>A health care sharing ministry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Indian tribes<\/b> &#8212; You&#8217;re either of these:\n<ul>\n<li>A member of a federally recognized tribe<\/li>\n<li>Not an Indian tribe member, but eligible for services through an Indian Health Services provider<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Low income<\/b> &#8212; Your income is below the filing requirement.<\/li>\n<li><b>Short coverage gap<\/b> &#8212; You were uninsured for no more than two consecutive months of the year.<\/li>\n<li><b>Financial hardships<\/b>:\n<ul>\n<li>You were homeless, evicted, or facing eviction or foreclosure in the past six months.<\/li>\n<li>You received a shut-off notice from a utility company.<\/li>\n<li>You filed for bankruptcy in the last six months or incurred substantial debt for medical expenses in the last 24 months that you couldn&#8217;t pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Personal hardships<\/b>:\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;re a recent victim of domestic violence.<\/li>\n<li>You recently experienced the death of a close family member.<\/li>\n<li>You experienced unexpected increases in necessary expenses due to caring for an ill, disabled, or aging family member.<\/li>\n<li>You experienced a fire, flood, or other natural or human-caused disaster that caused substantial damage to your property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Insurance eligibility reasons<\/b>:\n<ul>\n<li>You expected to claim a child as a dependent who&#8217;s:\n<ul>\n<li>Supposed to receive medical support from another person, as ordered in court<\/li>\n<li>Been denied coverage in Medicaid and Children&#8217;s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You were determined ineligible for Medicaid since your state didn&#8217;t expand eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).<\/li>\n<li>You have a marketplace eligibility appeal<\/li>\n<li>You experienced another hardship in obtaining health insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Citizenship status<\/b> &#8212; You can be exempt if you&#8217;re:\n<ul>\n<li>Not a U.S. citizen, or U.S. national, or an alien lawfully present in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>A U.S. citizen or resident who qualifies for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/expat-tax-preparation\/resource-center\/income\/foreign\/foreign-earned-income-exclusion\/\">foreign earned income exclusion<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A bona fide resident of any U.S. possession<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Affordability<\/b> &#8212; The lowest-priced plan you can get costs more than 8.05% of your household income.<\/li>\n<li><b>Incarceration<\/b> &#8212; You&#8217;re detained or jailed, and not being held pending disposition of charges. This means you have already been sentenced and are currently serving it out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you applied for an exemption through the marketplace when you signed up for insurance, you&#8217;ll receive a certificate when you&#8217;re approved. If your exemption is still in pending status, tell us about the exemption type.
