To understand what costs are covered as a deduction, read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-medical-expenses-can-i-deduct\"><b>What medical expenses can I deduct?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For any medical condition, it includes the unreimbursed cost of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diagnosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mitigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Items needed for the above purposes, including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagnostic devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to deduct medical expenses, they must alleviate or prevent a physical or mental defect or illness. You can&#8217;t deduct expenses that simply benefit general health, like vitamins or a vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can deduct these medical expenses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cost of medical care from any of these types of practitioners:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acupuncturists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chiropractors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye doctors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical doctors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occupational therapists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Osteopathic doctors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical therapists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Podiatrists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychiatrists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychoanalysts giving medical care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psychologists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other qualified medical practitioners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation costs to and from medical care. These policies include those that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pay you a certain amount (Ex: policy that pays you $200 a day while hospitalized)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay you for lost earnings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay a flat amount for the loss of a limb or eyesight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Contributions you make to a health savings account (HSA) aren&#8217;t medical expenses. For employer-sponsored plans, HSA contributions are made pre-tax. Otherwise, contributions are deducted \u201cabove-the-line\u201d as adjustments to income. Medical expenses paid with HSA distributions are not deductible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to learn more about HSAs, see Form 8889 instructions at www.irs.gov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-medical-expenses-deductible-in-the-year-paid-or-incurred\"><b>Are medical expenses deductible in the year paid or incurred?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can include only the medical and dental expenses you paid in the current tax year. It doesn&#8217;t matter when you received the services.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/medical-expense-deduction.jpg\" alt=\"medical expenses deduction\" class=\"wp-image-40274\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The payment dates for expenses paid by the following methods are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Payment by check &#8212; the day you mail or deliver the check<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online or phone &#8212; the date reported on the statement showing when you made the payment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit card &#8212; the date the charge is made, not the date you pay the credit card bill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-whose-medical-expenses-can-i-include-on-my-return\"><b>Whose medical expenses can I include on my return?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can deduct medical expenses for anyone who qualifies as your spouse or dependent when either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The service was provided<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bill was paid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re divorced, you can deduct any qualifying bills you pay for your children as a medical expense.
