The answer is yes. You must meet income limits set by the IRS to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-type-of-student-loan-interest-qualifies\">What type of student loan interest qualifies?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A qualified student loan is a loan you took out only for qualified education expenses that were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For you, your spouse, or a person who was your dependent when you took out the loan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid or incurred within a reasonable period of time before or after you took out the loan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For education provided during an academic period for an eligible student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Loans from these sources aren\u2019t considered qualified student loans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Related person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Qualified employer plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Qualified education expenses are the total costs to attend an eligible school. This includes graduate school. The costs include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tuition and fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Room and board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Books, supplies, and equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other necessary related expenses, like transportation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-can-claim-the-student-loan-interest-tax-deduction\">Who can claim the student loan interest tax deduction?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can usually claim the student loan tax deduction if you meet all these requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your filing status is any status except Married Filing Separately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No one else is claiming you as a dependent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re legally obligated to pay interest on a qualified student loan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You paid interest on a qualified student loan within a specific tax year you are claiming the deduction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-student-loan-interest-tax-deduction-income-limits\">Student loan interest tax deduction income limits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum deduction you can take is based on an income limit for each filing status. If you&#8217;re a higher-income taxpayer, the student loan interest tax deduction is reduced or eliminated. In other words, you can&#8217;t claim the deduction at all if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is above the income limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you can\u2019t take the deduction if your loan qualifies for student loan forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re <strong>Married Filing Jointly<\/strong> (for tax year 2025):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can deduct up to $2,500 &nbsp;of paid student loan interest if your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is $170,000<strong> or less<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your student loan deduction is gradually reduced if your modified AGI is <strong>more than <\/strong>$170,000 but less than $200,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can\u2019t claim a deduction if your modified AGI is $200,000 <strong>or more.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re filing as <strong>Single, Head of Household, or Qualified Surviving Spouse<\/strong> (for tax year 2025):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can deduct up to $2,500 of paid student loan interest if your modified AGI is $85,000<strong> or less<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your deduction is gradually reduced if your modified AGI is $85,000<strong> but less than $95,000<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can\u2019t claim a deduction if your modified AGI is $100,000 <strong>or more<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-the-student-loan-interest-deduction-works\"><a><\/a>How the student loan interest deduction works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably want to know how the student loan interest tax deduction works, especially if you think you qualify. Like any other tax deduction, it lowers your taxable income, and in some instances, could lower your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/tax-brackets-and-rates\/what-are-the-tax-brackets\/\">tax bracket<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This deduction is above the line, meaning it\u2019s an adjustment to your taxable income, and you don\u2019t have to itemize your deductions to claim it. You can subtract up to $2,500 of interest paid from your gross income when calculating Adjusted Gross Income.
