The student can be either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An undergraduate<\/li>\n<li>A graduate student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scholarship money can be any of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tax-free<\/li>\n<li>Partially taxable<\/li>\n<li>Fully taxable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Tax-free income<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a degree-seeking student, don&#8217;t report scholarship money spent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For qualified education expenses<\/li>\n<li>At a qualified educational institution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Qualified education expenses are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuition<\/li>\n<li>Fees required by a qualified educational institution for:\n<ul>\n<li>Enrollment<\/li>\n<li>Attendance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Expenses required of all students enrolled in a course, like:\n<ul>\n<li>Books<\/li>\n<li>Fees<\/li>\n<li>Equipment<\/li>\n<li>Supplies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can&#8217;t claim expenses for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Room and board<\/li>\n<li>Travel<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<li>Clerical help<\/li>\n<li>Equipment that&#8217;s not required of all students enrolled in a course<\/li>\n<li>Costs not required for enrollment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Partially taxable income<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Scholarship money is taxable if used for these education expenses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Room and board<\/li>\n<li>Travel<\/li>\n<li>Any other expense not required for enrollment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Report your taxable scholarship amount on one of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Form 1040, Line 7<\/li>\n<li>Form 1040A, Line 7<\/li>\n<li>Form 1040EZ, Line 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you didn&#8217;t receive a W-2 listing the taxable amount, write &#8220;SCH&#8221; and the taxable amount on the dotted line to the left of Line 7 or Line 1.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Fully taxable income<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a non-degree student, include the full amount of your scholarship or fellowship in your taxable income.
