{"id":28348,"date":"2017-09-19T02:14:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T02:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/?p=28348"},"modified":"2018-06-19T14:01:44","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T19:01:44","slug":"tax-dictionary-claim-refund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-claim-refund\/","title":{"rendered":"Claim for Refund"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>IRS Definition<\/h2>\n<p>A claim is a request by the taxpayer for a refund of assessed tax that has been paid (tax, penalties, and interest).<\/p>\n<h2>More from H&amp;R Block<\/h2>\n<p>If you owe a large penalty, it may be best to pay the penalty to reduce the amount of interest you will pay, and then file a claim for refund.<\/p>\n<p>If you have already paid a tax penalty and want to request a refund of the penalty that you paid based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-reasonable-cause-penalty-relief\/\">reasonable cause<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-irs-error-penalty-abatement\/\">IRS error<\/a>, you can file IRS Form 843, <em>Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You must file this form within two years of the date you paid the penalties.
