Indirectly, Yes."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Technically, the IRS can\u2019t take your passport. But the IRS can start the process that leads to the State Department restricting your passport. But \u2013 that\u2019s only if you owe a large amount of taxes and you\u2019re not in an agreement to pay the IRS.<\/p>\n<h2>Your passport is in danger if you could be classified as a \u201cseriously delinquent tax debtor\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Congress defined this population as people who owe taxes of more than $51,000 and haven\u2019t made any arrangements with the IRS to pay their outstanding debt.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this program, the first thing you\u2019ll get is an IRS notice about your outstanding tax bill. If you don\u2019t do anything about your balance, the IRS will eventually notify the State Department. Then, the State Department can restrict your international travel and your passport renewal.<\/p>\n<h2>Get into an IRS agreement to pay your taxes to remove the restrictions<\/h2>\n<p>When you set up an agreement with the IRS, the IRS will \u201cdecertify\u201d you and notify the State Department within 30 days. After that, you\u2019ll be able to travel abroad and\/or renew your passport.<\/p>\n<p>People in this situation should immediately set up a payment agreement with the IRS on their outstanding tax bill.<\/p>\n<p>Payment arrangements that will allow the IRS to decertify you include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monthly payment plans (called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-installment-agreement\/\">installment agreements<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Programs for people in financial hardship (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-currently-not-collectible\/\">currently not collectible status<\/a> or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-offer-compromise\/\">offer in compromise<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your passport is or may be affected, you\u2019ll probably want a tax professional to help you get a qualifying agreement.
