As you setting your financial goals, checking your credit report and credit score to find out where you stand may be one of your first steps.<\/p>\n

What if you want to check your credit score, but you\u2019re not sure where to begin?<\/p>\n

Before we tell you the best resources, let us\u00a0clear one misunderstanding: the idea that checking your credit score harms your credit is a myth.<\/p>\n

Credit Inquiries Are Not Created Equal<\/h3>\n

\u201cHard inquiries\u201d or the type that a credit card or auto dealership makes when they\u2019re deciding whether or not to extend you credit, can hurt your score. But \u201csoft inquiries,\u201d like checking your own credit, don\u2019t affect your score.<\/p>\n

Where Are\u00a0Resources to Monitor Your Credit Score?<\/h3>\n

There are three major credit-rating bureaus<\/a>\u00a0— Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each bureau allows you to check your credit report\u00a0independently and often times at no cost.<\/p>\n

The best way to space this out is to check your credit report with one bureau every four months. You could\u00a0check your Experian report in January, your Equifax report in May, and your TransUnion report in September. This will help you spot flaws and errors more quickly than checking your report from all three bureaus on the same day of the year.<\/p>\n

Note, however, that the bureaus will only allow you to see your credit report, which is different from your credit score. A credit report is an itemized list of your activities (such as your mortgage, car loans and credit cards). The list contains notes like your credit limit, the amount of available credit that you\u2019re using, and whether or not you\u2019ve made any late payments.<\/p>\n

It does not, however, give you a numerical score. That score \u2013 your \u201ccredit score\u201d \u2013 is available for free from Credit Karma<\/a>, although it uses data only from TransUnion. One of its competitors, Credit Sesame<\/a>, also offers free scores, though it uses data only from Experian.<\/p>\n

Neither of these are the official FICO score, which is compiled from data from all three agencies. But these are \u201cequivalency scores\u201d that can give you a reasonable idea of what your FICO score might be.<\/p>\n

You can get your official FICO score through myfico.com<\/a>, although the website will sign you up for a \u201cfree 10-day trial.\u201d If you don\u2019t cancel within that period, you\u2019re obligated to a minimum 3-month period of credit monitoring for $14.95 per month.<\/p>\n

Unless you want ultra-specific data, the \u201cequivalency scores\u201d from Credit Karma and Credit Sesame will give you solid answers, without the annoying \u201cfree trial\u201d period.<\/p>\n

What other Resources are Out There?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Annualcreditreport.com<\/a> will allow you to check your credit report once a year for free, but it charges you to see your score. However, you\u2019ll see the actual FICO score from all three agencies. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends annualcreditreport.com on its website.<\/p>\n

Two\u00a0Unusual Ways to Access your Credit Score:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Use a peer-to-peer lending site. Prosper.com<\/a> and LendingClub.com<\/a> are both sites that let ordinary people borrow and lend money to one another, without a bank as a middleman. They both show \u201cgrades\u201d for borrowers, based on the borrower\u2019s credit score.<\/li>\n
  2. Check with your credit card provider. According to this Forbes<\/em> article, “More than 50 million people are now finding FICO scores on their monthly credit card statements, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
