The recipient of the nominee dividends is required to report the nominee income on their own return unless they pass them on to the actual owners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll describe a couple of scenarios where this might occur and outline how to handle them:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-form-1099-div-dividends-distributions\/\">Form 1099-DIV<\/a> showing dividends for your child\u2019s investment account. If the form has your child\u2019s Social Security number and the amount of the investment income is less than $1,050, you don&#8217;t have to report the income. However, if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/forms\/amending-taxes-for-1099-forms\/\">Form 1099-DIV<\/a> has your Social Security number on it, you&#8217;re required to report this nominee income on your return.<\/li>\n<li>You received a Form 1099-DIV showing dividends earned by an account jointly owned with a sibling. If your name is listed first on the account, you&#8217;re considered the tax liable owner and the form will be sent to you. To pass your sibling their share of the dividends, you\u2019ll complete Form 1099-DIV to indicate the portion that was transferred. A copy of that Form 1099-DIV should be given to your sibling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Should I Include My Child\u2019s Nominee Dividends With Ordinary Dividends?<\/h2>\n<p>No, you shouldn&#8217;t include the nominee dividends from your child\u2019s account with your ordinary dividends when filing taxes. Instead, you\u2019ll provide the nominee dividend amount on Form 1040, Schedule B, Line 5 separately from ordinary dividends and write \u201cNominee Distribution\u201d below the total.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nominee dividends are cash dividends paid to someone on behalf of the original account owner.
