And many teenagers find out the hard way that paying taxes is a regular part of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teen-taxes-where-to-begin\"><strong>Teen taxes: Where to begin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-prep-checklist\/\">gather tax documents to file your own taxes<\/a>, don\u2019t forget to consider whether or not your teenager owes money to the IRS as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/tax-dips-for-teenagers-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"teaching tax tips for teens\" class=\"wp-image-47132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/tax-dips-for-teenagers-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/tax-dips-for-teenagers-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/tax-dips-for-teenagers-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-teenagers-have-to-file-taxes\"><strong>Do teenagers have to file taxes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, do teenagers have to file taxes in all cases? Generally, if a teen is a dependent of another taxpayer, they don\u2019t have to file a return if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unearned income (such as interest and dividends) is over $1,100<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earned income is over $15,750, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gross income is more than the larger of $1,100 or earned income up to $11,850 plus $350<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the total earnings for the year to see if they are below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/adjustments-and-deductions\/standard-vs-itemized-deductions\/\">standard deduction<\/a> amount. If they are, filing taxes as a teenager might not be necessary. However, teenagers may need to file to get a refund of their tax withholdings for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understand-the-teen-s-employee-designation\"><strong>Understand the teen\u2019s employee designation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay attention to the way your teenager is classified by their employer. Some smaller employers like the idea of hiring&nbsp;summer help as contractors, rather than as \u201cregular\u201d W-2 employees. Contract workers can come with less paperwork and fewer tax complications for the employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teenagers might also find this arrangement attractive because they don\u2019t see withholdings from their paychecks. When a teen is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/forms\/form-w2\/\">W-2 employee<\/a>, payroll taxes, and even federal taxes, can be withheld from the paycheck. The fact that federal taxes often come back as a refund rarely registers with teenagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An employer will provide the contractor with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/forms\/form-1099\/\">1099 tax form<\/a> showing the amount paid to them rather than the W-2 that is provided to an employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, being a 1099 contractor can come with extra headaches at tax time. A teenager who makes more than $400 as an independent contractor has to pay self-employment taxes. So, even if your teen doesn\u2019t make enough to owe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/income\/other-income\/income-tax\/\">federal income taxes<\/a>, they will have to file a return and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/small-business\/self-employed\/self-employment-tax\/\">pay self-employment tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the implications of different types of employee classification and realize what seems like a good idea for a summer job might not be as attractive come tax time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-hrb-single-override-cta\" class=\"wp-block-create-block-hrb-single-override-cta\" style=\"background-color:#005d1f\"><div class=\"hrb-single-override-cta--image\" style=\"background-image:url(&quot;https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/wp-content\/themes\/hrb_tic\/img\/on-laptop-at-desk-graphic.png&quot;);background-size:contain;background-position:center;background-repeat:no-repeat\"><\/div><div class=\"hrb-single-override-cta--copy #ffffff\"><h3 class=\"main-heading\">File with H&amp;R Block to get your max refund<\/h3><div class=\"quick-links-list\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/online-tax-filing\/\">File online<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-offices\/?app_method=GENERAL_TAX_PREP_METHOD\">File with a tax pro<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-special-rules-about-taxes-for-minors\"><strong>Special rules about taxes for minors <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxes for minors have some special cases\u2013related only to teenagers doing certain jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-household-employees\"><strong>Household employees<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Household employees under the age of 18 don\u2019t have to worry about payroll or self-employment taxes, unless they are in the trade or business of that job. This means that there are exceptions for jobs that include mowing lawns and babysitting. Those under 18 can also get a self-employment tax exemption if they deliver newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-family-business\"><strong>Family business<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting that you can hire your child under the age of 18 for work in your sole proprietor family business, and you don\u2019t have to worry about payroll taxes. But, once again, you need to be careful. Even in the family business, once you pay your teenager enough to hit the standard deduction for filing, everything changes and withholdings become important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-kiddie-tax\"><strong>The kiddie tax<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many parents like to teach their children the importance of investing. However, unearned income for teenagers is subject to different rules than earned income\u2014just like it is for adults. If your teen\u2019s investment income reaches a certain level (see above), he or she has to file a tax return and report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Income above that level is taxed at the ordinary income and capital gain rates of estates and trusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teen-taxes-don-t-forget-state-obligations\"><strong>Teen taxes: Don\u2019t forget state obligations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, even if you or your teen is covered with regard to federal taxes, it\u2019s important to remember that each state has its own income tax rules and requirements.
