Specifically, when you file your return, the IRS compares these two things to see if they match:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The prior-year adjusted gross income (AGI) you entered<\/li>\n<li>Your prior-year tax records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If these don\u2019t match, the IRS will reject your return. In most cases, you can easily fix this issue and successfully e-file your return again.<\/p>\n<p>How do you get your AGI from last year? You can locate your prior-year AGI on your 2024 return on <strong>Form 1040, Line 11<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Locate Your Previous Year AGI If You Don\u2019t Have Access to Your Return<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you can\u2019t find your prior-year AGI, you have a couple of options. You\u2019ll need to request a copy of a return for 2024 from the IRS, which you can do any of these ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>View or download a transcript of your return online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/get-transcript\">www.irs.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\">www.irs.gov<\/a> and request a hard copy transcript of your return be mailed to you. This will take 5-10 business days.<\/li>\n<li>Call the IRS at <strong>800-908-9946 <\/strong>and request a hard copy transcript be mailed to you. This will take 5-10 business days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you and your spouse filed jointly last year, your spouse\u2019s AGI will be the same as yours. If your spouse had a different AGI, you\u2019ll need his or her information to get their AGI from the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>After you have the correct AGI, go to the overview of your online account and complete these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At <strong>Check Status<\/strong>, next to the federal e-file rejected, click <strong>Next Steps<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From the <strong>Check Your E-file Status <\/strong>screen, click <strong>Next.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Review Your Rejection Messages <\/strong>screen, click <strong>Fix Issues<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Correcting Your Federal Electronic Signature<\/strong> screen, click <strong>Next.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You can now edit your last year&#8217;s AGI and\/or PIN.<\/li>\n<li>After you edit those fields, click <strong>Continue to File<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>E-file<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Next <\/strong>to continue through the e-file process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re e-filing your return, the IRS will verify your identity by using your personal tax information from the previous year.
