When the IRS rejects a federal tax return because a dependent\u2019s SSN or name doesn\u2019t match their records, you\u2019ll first want to check that you entered your dependent\u2019s information correctly on your return.<\/p>\n

To check this:<\/p>\n

  1. Open your return in the H&R Block Tax Software<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Click on the\u00a0Federal\u00a0<\/strong>tab, then click on the Personal Information<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n
  3. Click Go To<\/strong>, next to Your Dependents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. Click Edit\u00a0<\/strong>next to your dependent’s entry.<\/li>\n
  5. Verify the spelling of the name and the SSN.<\/li>\n
  6. Click Next\u00a0<\/strong>until you reach the Your Dependents<\/strong> screen.<\/li>\n
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 for each dependent listed.<\/li>\n
  8. If you corrected your information, you’ll need to e-file your return again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If the IRS rejected your return, but the dependent\u2019s information is correct as you\u2019ve entered it, the problem might be that your tax return was rejected by the IRS because your dependent\u2019s information is wrong in its systems. You\u2019ll need to contact both the IRS and the Social Security Administration (SSA) to correct their records.<\/p>\n

      Filing Again After Your Federal Tax Return Was Rejected Because of a Dependent\u2019s SSN or Name<\/h2>\n

      If the IRS rejected your tax return because your dependent\u2019s information was wrong in its systems, it can take several weeks for the SSA and the IRS to correct their records. You should file your return by mail this year because of all this. We’ll help you do this by including mailing instructions with your printed return.<\/p>\n
