Florida state income tax

Florida is one of a handful of states that does not tax individual income. That means most Florida residents don’t need to file a state income tax return or pay Florida income tax on wages, salaries, retirement income, or other personal earnings.

However, while individuals generally don’t pay Florida state taxes on individual income, some businesses may have Florida tax filing and payment obligations.

Does Florida have state income tax?

Florida does not impose a personal income tax, so residents generally don’t pay Florida income tax on earned income and do not file a Florida individual income tax return. Florida generates revenue through other taxes, including sales taxes and property taxes, rather than taxing personal income.

Who pays taxes in Florida?

Although individuals generally don’t pay Florida state income tax, other taxes may apply depending on your situation. Individuals may pay sales tax on purchases, property tax on real estate owned in Florida, and other state and local taxes and fees.

Businesses that meet Florida filing requirements may need to file a corporate income tax return and pay any taxes due.

What is the Florida tax rate?

For individuals, the Florida state income tax rate is 0%. Because Florida does not impose a personal income tax, there are no Florida income tax brackets for individuals. While individuals don’t pay Florida state income tax, certain corporations may be subject to Florida corporate income tax and related filing requirements.

Florida Sales Taxes:

Florida levies a 6% general sales tax. Certain items have a different rate including amusement machine receipts, leasing commercial real property, and electricity. Many Florida counties also impose an additional sales surcharge on most transactions. For certain transactions, the first $5,000 of the purchase price is subject to county sales surtax.

Personal and Real Property Taxes:

If you purchase a home in Florida, property tax is levied and paid at the county level and is based on the “just” or fair market value of the property. Learn more about property taxes in Florida.

Personal income tax, intangible assets such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds are not taxed by Florida.

While individuals do not have to pay Florida income tax, corporations may have a corporate income tax obligation. In fact, Florida imposes a 4.458% corporate income tax for tax years beginning between Jan. 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2021.

Taxpayers are required to file Florida corporate income tax returns electronically if they were required to file federal income tax returns electronically, or if $20,000 or more in Florida corporate income tax was paid during the prior state fiscal year.

When are Florida state tax returns due?

Most Florida residents do not have a state income tax filing obligation because Florida does not tax individual income. Certain corporations that are required to file a Florida corporate income tax return must file by the first day of the fifth month following your fiscal year-end (May 1 for standard calendar-year filer).)

How to check your Florida tax refund?

If you’re expecting money back after filing your taxes, you’re likely looking for the status of your federal income tax refund rather than a Florida refund.

Because Florida does not impose an individual Florida state income tax, Florida residents do not file a Florida state income tax return and will not receive a Florida state income tax refund.
