Question

I have a question about an incorrect W-2 Form. How can I fix something incorrect or missing on my W-2 – How can I go about obtaining a corrected W-2 Form?

Answer

You should contact your employer and ask if the W-2 is correct. If it isn’t correct, then you should ask for a corrected W-2 Form. If, by the end of February, your attempts to replace the incorrect W-2 Form with the corrected W-2 Form have been unsuccessful, you are able to request that an IRS representative initiate a Form W-2 complaint with your employer on your behalf. The IRS will send your employer a letter requesting that they provide you with a corrected Form W-2 within ten days. The letter advises your employer of their responsibilities to provide a corrected Form W-2 and of the penalties for their failure to do so. You can use the Form 4852 in the event that your employer does not provide you with the corrected Form W-2 in time to file your tax return. If you receive a corrected Form W-2 after you filed your return and it does not agree with the income or withheld tax you reported on your return, file an amended return on Form 1040X.
