If you don’t have access to a computer, you may call the West Virginia Tax Department at
1-304-558-3333 or 1-800-982-8297.

Due to recent budget cuts in the West Virginia Tax Department, you may see longer than usual on-hold delays waiting for the next available Taxpayer Services representative.

How long can you expect to wait for your West Virginia refund?

Paper return filers could experience delays up to 12 weeks from the date your return was received to the West Virginia State Tax Department. E-filed tax returns may take quicker than paper-filed, however this information is not listed on the state’s website.

First-time filers should allow about three additional weeks to the timelines above.

What can cause a delay in my West Virginia refund?

A few things could cause a longer delay in your West Virginia refund, including the following:

  • If the department needs to verify information reported on your return or request additional information, the process will take longer.
  • Math errors in your return or other adjustments.
  • You used more than one form type to complete your return.
