If My H&R Block Will Not Update on Windows, What Should I Do?

If H&R Block Tax Software will not update on your Windows computer, check for these items and try installing the H&R Block Tax Software updates again after each change you make:

• If the software isn’t installed on your C: Drive, updates won’t work. Check to make sure the software isn’t installed on any other drive.
• You need Administrative Privileges to install the software update. You might not have the necessary permissions to update your H&R Block Tax Software if you’re using a workplace computer or laptop.
• Recent Windows updates that haven’t been completely installed can cause problems updating. Restart your computer and try again, especially if you’ve just updated Windows.
• Sometimes, H&R Block will not update if you have any antivirus or firewall software running. Close these programs and try updating again.

H&R Block Still Will Not Update on Windows

If your H&R Block Tax Software will not update on Windows after you’ve tried all of the steps above, you can install updates manually by downloading them from the H&R Block Tax Software Update Center.

For a federal update:

1. Under the Federal Updates section, click Windows Program Updates.
2. From the drop-down list, choose the product version and click Download Update.
3. Save the update file to your desktop.
4. Close the H&R Block Tax Software program.
5. Right-click the .exe file, then click Run as Administrator.
6. Follow the instructions displayed by the update program to complete the installation.

For a state update:

1. Under the State Updates section, click Windows Program Updates.
2. From the drop-down list, choose the appropriate state program, then click Download Update. If your state isn’t listed in the drop-down menu, then an update hasn’t been released yet.
3. Save the update file to your desktop.
4. Close the H&R Block Tax Software program.
5. Right-click the .exe file, then click Run as Administrator.
6. Follow the instructions displayed by the update program to complete the installation.
