Jeffrey J. Jones II

President and Chief Executive Officer

Jeff Jones is president and CEO of H&R Block, leading the global business that inspires financial confidence through its small business, financial, and tax preparation services. These digitally enabled solutions are powered by its human advantage – the expertise and care of more than 120,000 franchisees and associates.

Jones brings nearly 30 years of executive management, innovative leadership and operational excellence to the company, having held key roles at top companies in retail, consumer products, agency, and technology industries.

Prior to H&R Block, Jones was the first president of the global ride sharing business, Uber. He has also served as executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Target, serving as a senior member of the company’s four primary operating groups: core business, strategy and innovation, talent, and risk and reputation. In addition, he has held executive and leadership roles serving iconic brands such as The Coca-Cola Company, Gap, and Leo Burnett.

Jones serves on the board of directors of Advance Auto Parts and is a member of the Compensation and Nominating and Governance committees. He has also advised Brit+Co., The Mayo Clinic and multiple early-stage technology companies, in addition to non-profits including Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center, The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, and the Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics at Fuqua Business School.

Tony Bowen

Chief Financial Officer

Tony Bowen is chief financial officer of H&R Block. In this role, Bowen is responsible for leading all financial functions and setting overall financial strategy for the company.

Since joining the company in 2004, Bowen has held many senior leadership roles, most recently as the vice president of finance for H&R Block’s U.S. Tax Services division. In this position, he was in charge of business planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and acquisitions and development for the 10,000 U.S. retail locations. Before that, Bowen was the vice president and general manager of H&R Block’s DIY Tax Services business, managing the online, mobile, and desktop software products.

Previously, Bowen served in a variety of roles for the company and its subsidiaries, including assistant vice president of corporate development, program director of finance, director of hedging, and senior treasury analyst.

Prior to joining H&R Block, Bowen held positions with American Century Investments and George K. Baum and Company.

Bowen holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Missouri. Bowen is also a CFA Charterholder and member of the CFA Institute.

Tom Gerke

General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer

Tom Gerke is general counsel and chief administrative officer of H&R Block. In this position, Gerke provides leadership for the company’s legal, government relations, and compliance functions as well as The Tax Institute. Since joining H&R Block, Gerke has held additional responsibilities, including leadership of human resources and as interim president and chief executive officer.

Gerke brings years of executive, legal, and staff management experience to the company, including roles in telecom as executive vice chairman for CenturyLink, president and chief executive officer of Embarq, and general counsel for Embarq with additional responsibilities for its Wholesale Markets business unit. He served in various leadership and legal roles at Sprint Corporation, including executive vice president, law and external affairs. Prior to Sprint, Gerke spent nine years in private legal practice focused primarily on strategic corporate transactions. Gerke also previously served as executive vice president and general counsel for YRC Worldwide.

Gerke currently serves as a member of the board of directors for Consolidated Communications Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNSL) and previously served as a member of the board of directors for TEGP Management, LLC, the general partner of Tallgrass Energy GP, LP (NYSE: TEGP). He serves or has served on several local boards, including Rockhurst University and the Kansas City Local Investment Commission.

Gerke holds an MBA from Rockhurst University, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Missouri.

Jamil Khan

Chief Strategy & Development Officer

Jamil Khan is the chief strategy and development officer for H&R Block. In this role, Khan is responsible for helping to identify and lead the company’s strategic development and growth opportunities and generate value for stakeholders as it continues to disrupt the tax preparation industry and expand its services.

Khan has more than two decades of experience leading strategy for companies ranging from technology companies to Fortune 100 brands. He has worked on multiple merger and acquisition integrations, defined growth strategies, managed product development and P&Ls, and restructured lagging business units.

Prior to joining H&R Block, Khan served as senior vice president of strategy and business development for a Boston-based technology company focused on disrupting the traditional textbook market, playing an instrumental role in integration efforts following the company’s May 1, 2019 announced merger with McGraw Hill. Khan was also head of Americas for the Timex Group, with P&L responsibility for Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. He helped drive major change management processes, established new partnerships and executed the successful turnaround of Timex Canada in 2018. Khan has also led strategy at Staples and Zipcar and served as a strategy consultant for the Boston Consulting Group. He started his career in sales and marketing at Procter & Gamble.

He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from University College London.

Julius Lai

Chief Product and Experience Officer

Julius Lai serves as H&R Block’s Chief Product and Experience Officer. In this role, he is responsible for reimagining client engagement with a digital-first focus.

Over the course of Lai’s career, he has operated at the intersections of marketing, technology, process and people to build better customer experiences for global travel and entertainment companies such as Activision, Expedia, and Marriott International.

Prior to joining H&R Block, Lai served as the Senior Vice President of Digital and Loyalty Marketing for AMC Theatres, where he led teams responsible for creating world-class digital experiences. In addition, he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, with his last duty station at the Pentagon as Chief of Network Engineering.

Lai currently serves as a member on the board of directors for the Kansas City Zoo.

He holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as two Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees in electrical and biomedical engineering from Duke University.

Alan Lowden

Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer

Alan Lowden is chief information officer at H&R Block. Lowden is responsible for all aspects of technology, information security, and support across six global development sites and 11,000 H&R Block global retail offices.

Lowden has more than 20 years of leadership experience in product development, software engineering, mobile development, and cloud-based solutions across multiple industries. Prior to his current role, Lowden served in several executive roles at H&R Block, including general manager of Block Advisors, vice president of client experience, and vice president of technology for H&R Block’s retail and DIY tax systems. During his tenure, he led the design, integration, and launch of key systems such as a new tax preparation engine and a customer relationship management platform. These technologies are the foundational elements that enable a seamless, omni-channel experience for H&R Block’s clients.

Before joining H&R Block, Lowden was the vice president of enterprise government for Lexmark Enterprise Software. He also started a management and technology consulting firm and held several strategic roles with Accenture earlier in his career, where he led solution architecture and development for several large-scale digital transformation projects.

Lowden holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Kansas.

Tiffany Scalzitti Monroe

Chief People Officer

Tiffany Scalzitti Monroe is the chief people officer for H&R Block. In this role, Monroe leads H&R Block’s people strategies, including organizational and performance management, talent development, and ensuring the workforce has both the people and organizational capabilities to enable and ultimately deliver company strategy. She leads programs and initiatives to attract, develop and retain a world-class full-time and seasonal workforce of nearly 90,000.

Monroe has more than two decades of human resources experience. Prior to her role at H&R Block, she served as the chief human resources officer, at U.S. Foods. While there, she oversaw talent and culture development, including instituting a formal talent assessment process, formal development programs, and redesigning the company’s incentive programs to better attract and retain great talent.

Before U.S. Foods, Monroe spent 14 years at Target Corporation where she served as senior vice president for human resources at Target Canada, vice president of human resources, and director of human resources. During her tenure, she developed a comprehensive total compensation offering, implemented an innovative program focused on enhanced talent development, and maintained high employee engagement and retention levels by ensuring a positive team culture and working environment.

Monroe holds a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Indiana University.

Karen Orosco

Senior Vice President, U.S. Retail

Karen Orosco was appointed as Senior Vice President, U.S. Retail, effective May 1, 2016. In this position, Orosco, who joined H&R Block in 1999, is responsible for driving service delivery of tax services and adjacent products, growing new clients and providing outstanding client service through 10,000 company- and franchise-owned offices across the country, including 350 Block Advisors locations.

Prior to her current role, Orosco was the Vice President of Retail Operations. During her six years in this role, she led the implementation of the company’s new tax preparation system and the redesign of the training and operational functions to better support clients, franchisees and company associates across the country.

During her tenure at H&R Block, Orosco has held a variety of technology, operations and client service positions including serving as Vice President, Information Technology and Vice President, Strategic Sourcing. Her diverse leadership background on major initiatives such as the creation of a new development center and the design of the corporate headquarters in Kansas City has given her an appreciation for the importance of careful planning, disciplined execution, and strong partnership.

Orosco holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Houston and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas. She received the Henry Bloch Community Service Award in 2012.

Daniel J. Rieger

Vice President, International and Expat

Daniel J. Rieger was appointed Vice President, International and Expat in the spring of 2018. In this position, Rieger has overall responsibility for the HRB Canadian, Australian, Indian and Expat businesses.

Prior to this Rieger served as Vice President, Field Operations since fall of 2016. In this position, Rieger had overall responsibility for the company’s real estate, facilities, client service, acquisition and development, and company support organizations.

Before his time in Field Operations, Rieger served as Vice President, Real Estate for H&R Block, where he oversaw the daily management of all tax offices and corporate facilities, including lease negotiations, rent and tax payments, facilities management, design, construction, office remodels and vendor relations.

Rieger came to H&R Block in 2014 after a distinguished 11-year career with DineEquity, the nation’s largest casual dining company and parent company to two of America’s most iconic dining chains, Applebee’s® and IHOP®. While with DineEquity, Rieger served in a variety of leadership roles, including Executive Director, Strategy and Real Estate Development and Director, Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions.

Rieger received his B.A. in Business Administration and his B.A. in Psychology from William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri.

Heather Watts

Senior Vice President, DIY Tax

Heather Watts is Senior Vice President and General Manager of H&R Block’s DIY Tax business. She is directly responsible for all product and business strategy for the company’s growing do-it-yourself tax business. Heather oversees all the development, design, marketing and end-to-end client experience of all H&R Block online, software and mobile tax products and solutions.

Heather has been with H&R Block in various marketing and product development roles since 1997. Prior to leading the DIY tax team, she was Vice President of Digital Client Experience. She also was Director of Product Development where she led all consumer software and online product development for H&R Block’s DIY tax products.

Earlier in her H&R Block career, as Program Director to the Chairman and CEO, she was responsible for managing and coordinating the operational functions of the Executive Department. She worked across department and business unit lines to address strategic, operational and financial issues. Heather also provided assistance with business and strategic planning, communications and general management functions.

Heather earned her degree in communications with an emphasis in marketing from Truman State University. She is a graduate of H&R Block’s The Leadership Experience and completed the UMKC Bloch School of Business Executive Education program. She is also a graduate and alumni of the Kansas City Civic Council’s Kansas City Tomorrow leadership program.

Most recently, she served as Executive Committee Member of The Free File Alliance as well as a Board Member on the UMKC Executive Education Advisory Board.

Les Whiting

Chief Financial Services Officer

Les Whiting is H&R Block’s Chief Financial Services Officer, and also leads the financial strategy for the company’s subsidiary, Wave Financial. In his role, Whiting directs the efforts across the enterprise to develop financial solutions for consumers and small business owners.

Whiting is one of the leading payments industry experts in North America, with more than 25 years of technology, banking and financial services experience. Most recently he helped transform Wave from a software startup to a fintech disruptor, and continues to guide its risk, anti-fraud, and regulatory compliance. His background in financial services and payments spans from large corporations such as First Data, one of the world’s largest payment processors, and TD Bank Financial Group, to fintech startups. He is also an active early stage investor and advisor to emerging fintech and payment startups in North America.

He holds a degree in Business and Management Studies from MacEwan University, and Certificate in Internet Marketing from the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business.
